Oh Halloween. How I love thee.
Anyone who knows me knows that I get pretty excited when it comes time to dress up in a costume and dance the night away. This Halloween was no exception. A group of friends and I had settled on the idea to go as the characters from Clue (it was Matt’s idea and he had been wanting to do it for years), and Breccan and I went out to find costumes well in advance. I went as Ms. Peacock with the revolver, but ended up looking kind of like Queen Elizabeth. The anticipation was nearly too much for me to handle, and, come Saturday night, I was like a little kid, bouncing off the walls with excitement. That excitement transferred over into the pre-game portion of the evening at Deirdre and Antonio’s, where I managed to down way too many caesars and over-estimated my ability to walk in the new heels I had bought for my costume.
We got to the Pyramid for The Freaks Come Out in the 90s around 9:30pm – we were anticipating a sell-out, but we were dead-wrong, as the place was nearly empty when we got there. It picked up pretty quickly, though, as did my appetite for double rum and cokes. About two hours into our being there, I had to “recharge my batteries” so to speak, and following a brief bout of ickyness, I was back to normal – except that I had to abandon my heels and dance in my pantyhose all night.
The music was awesome (skipping down high-school-memory-lane), and the variety of costumes was great. There were only a few people of the I’m-wearing-lingerie-but-calling-it-a-costume variety (one woman in particular sporting the “gold digger” costume that was featured on the flier Matt brought home for me). Most people knew who we were dressed up as, and we even brought the ‘character’ and ‘weapon’ cards from the board game to alleviate any confusion. A guy we came across on the patio was dressed in a white body suit with numbers all over it, and his facial hair was shaved in the shape of the ‘pie’ symbol. I kept calling him “Numbers!!”, which I don’t think he appreciated. Whoops. Matt was the only one who got his costume right off the bat. It really was a good costume, but I was hammered.
On the 31st I went to Mom and Dad’s for 5:00pm to help Mom carve pumpkins, decorate the front entrance, and hand out candy. I love decorating the house, and I can’t wait until I have a house of my own so that I can hand out candy and be one of those neighbours who gets way too into Halloween.
We only had about 25 kids come by, which is a shame, but they were all so cute and ridiculous that it was a hit for me. The best is seeing little kids who are clearly experiencing their first Halloween, and trying to process just what the hell is going on, what they’re supposed to say to the stranger at the door, why they’re getting candy, and why the hell they’re stuffed into a cat costume. Cute city. To top it off, Mom and I sat around and drank wine and gossiped, and ate all of the good licorice. Another good year.
